There are so many things to see and do in our region. Here are a few suggestions of things you might like to check out while you are staying with us.

  • River sports

Get out on the New River, the second oldest river in the world, second only to the Nile, and yes, it does flow north eventually into the Mississippi! When driving on Hwy 88 to The Retreat, you will be seeing the North Fork of the New River

~Elk Shoals is the Methodist campground on the New River.  They have actually made a sandy beach on the river and there are little rapids, Fun!

 ~Zaloo’s Canoes, with canoes or tubes or kayaks

~New River State Park also on the eastern side of the county

~ Todd NC in Ashe County for tubing, kayaking, canoeing, fishing.

~Your guide for fishing in Ashe County rivers and streams is Rock on Charters.  They can take you out to fly fish or fish from boats for trout, muskies and small mouth bass year round!  Go to www.rockoncharters.net or call Ben Lucas at (540)520-9629.  Ben also works for Blue Ridge Conservancy which handles conservation easements for Ashe and surrounding counties.

  • Hiking

~An amazing hike with unusual habitat and great views is the Nature Conservancy’s Bluff Mountain, which has to be planned with the guide, our friend, Kim Hadley. Email Kim at BluffMountainPreserve@gmail.com. Or you can arrange to hike Bluff Mountain with our neighbor, Doug Munroe, (336)385-6507 

~NC State game lands on Three Top Mountain.  Kim or Doug can tell you about that hike a short drive west of The Retreat.

~Mount Jefferson in West Jefferson (This a car drive to the top of the highest mountain in “town” and see the view, not a hike)

~Elk Knob State Park (moderate)

~Grayson Highlands State Park, just over the VA line north of Jefferson.  You can see this mountain from our sunset spot at the top of the field!  There are hiking trails and wild ponies.

~Lansing Creeper Trail is a .5 mile paved walking path in Lansing part of the Rails to Trails program

~18-hole disc golf course at Ashe County Park in Jefferson

~ West Jefferson Gallery Crawl: Open House in more than 15 unique shops, art galleries and studios in Downtown West Jefferson on the 2nd Friday of each month June-October.

~ Ashe County Arts Council gallery also in West Jefferson (www.ashecountyarts.org)

~Ashe County has two churches that have frescoes like in Italy by world renown fresco artist, Ben Long; Holy Trinity Episcopal in Glendale Springs has The Last Supper and St. Mary’s Episcopal in West Jefferson has The Virgin Mary and others

~ West Jefferson Backstreet Park Concert Series, Fridays, May - August 5:30-7pm

Free summer concert series held every 3rd, 4th & 5th (when occurring) Friday evenings May-August, 5:30pm – 7:00pm. 2014 also offers a show on the 1st Friday evening of September! Bring your chair, blanket or picnic and enjoy the sounds of traditional, old time, and bluegrass music for ALL generations to enjoy!

  • Local Food

~Maple syrup: Our neighbors, Doug Munroe and Wheeler Munroe (father and daughter, who also run our sister lodge, The Guest House at Waterfall Mountain) actually have a commercial maple syrup operation on the farm next door to us!

~Local trout:  You can contact our next door neighbor, Doug Munroe, to get local trout from his pond for one of your dinners, and to see the maple syrup operation, (336)385-6507

~Saturday mornings from May through September are the Farmers’ Market in downtown West Jefferson on the Back Street

~Ashe County Cheese, a local cheese factory in West Jefferson

~Blueberries straight from our own 50 bushes in the front field at The Retreat, ripe in late June through July

~In West Jefferson: Boondock’s Brewery and Hotel Tavern and a Cuban restaurant.  Coffee shops: Bohemia on Main St and Julie’s on the Back Street.

~In Lansing: Pie on the Mountain pizza and the Rose Mountain Butcher Shop if you would like to pick up your own local meat

~In Jefferson: Coyote Kitchen

  • Bicycling

~Todd Railroad Grade Road by the South Fork of the New River. River Girl Fishing Co. for bike rentals.

~Virginia Creeper Trail can be accessed from Damascus VA about one hour drive north of The Retreat in Grayson Highlands State Park.
